I got the pleasure of being sent an album by a new cork band called The Butterfly Graveyard who are a two-piece from Cork. As always i popped the CD in and gave it a few spins.

My initial feeling was that it wasn’t my thing. Ive always been a more Rock / Indie Pop kind of person i guess but with a long journey ahead of me i resisted the initial urge to stop listening. As the album progressed along i found myself starting to more and more enjoy the album as it’s 11 track tale unfolded to my ears.

There is a bit of charm about each of the compositions as with each listen it grows on me more, and that is exactly what this album was for me. Its a grower and that is why i don’t listen to my first instinct anymore, because it can cause me to miss out on something i actually like a lot.

This album is start to finish the perfect driving music, and with each listen it grew on me more. I found myself humming and repeating back lyrics to “Writing You Off” whilst out and about the other day. Its the kind of intricate and delicate music that floats around your head popping to the forefront every now and then to remind you its still there.

Each of the tracks on the album have a haunted feeling to it keeping in theme with the name of Butterfly Graveyard, Songs like “The Butterfly Graveyard” or “Random Acts of Kindness” are soft spoken and melodic which is a theme throughout the album. The songs range from heartbreak and sadness with tinges of optimism here and there like the track “One in the Million“.

The Butterfly Graveyard certainly have potential. This is just their debut album, If you like acoustic singer / songwriter type music you certainly could find a place in your heart for these 2 guys. I imagine that if done right a live show featuring songs from this album could be the kind of gig that brings goosebumps to your skin. If they are as good live as they are on CD i think they could go quite far.
