3969556-1Jerome’s Law have been around for quite a long time, but  they only released their début album ‘Not Today’ at the tail end of 2011 and Kicking In The Brain is the second single to be taken from album. ‘Not Today’ was a simple mix of middle-of-the-road  instrumentation: guitar, bass, and drums, and the connotations that goes with that. Generic and somewhat bland on the face of it, but it had a trick up its sleeve; the sweet and genuinely evocative vocal of lead-singer Fleming. It’s the band’s saving grace and this holds through on the present single.

Kicking In The Brain starts off with the plodding instrumentation mentioned above, and it could be instantly written off as bland and uninteresting – jangly guitar reminiscent of your everyday busker. Yet as soon as Fleming hits “This kicking in my brain,” the song is redeemed. But not entirely. The instrumentation is still basic, uses far too many minor chords to suit Fleming’s vocals, and the accordion solo in the bridge does nothing to save the song.
