Radioactive GrandmaSince forming in 2011 The Radioactive Grandma have gone from strength to strength. With a loyal following and successful début album already under their belts, the future seems to hold nothing but success for this talented trio. In August they released their video for fan favourite ‘Don’t Look Down’, topping off what was an amazing summer for the band with a string of well received festival appearances.

On the 13th of February the band will be sharing their latest video with the release of Robot Song. ”We recorded the video in one single day of town based shenanigans, and it was a lot of fun to make” explains Grandma singer and guitarist Johnno Leader. ”It was recorded by our good friends Jimmy Deface and Matty Kearns, using cardboard as our main ingredient. We spent a day causing havoc around Cavan town taking a load of footage. We wanted to keep the story simple enough to complement the song, while still being interesting. We’re very proud of the results and we cant wait to see what people make of it!”

Even though their unique sound is the main attraction for the band, their extremely individual name is also a hot topic among fans ” We didn’t really have a clue about a band name when we picked out The Radioactive Grandma, we just wanted something that wasn’t trying to suggest a genre. We didn’t know at the time what kind of band we would become. Not that we think it matters at all, there’s plenty of ridiculous band names out there, but its up to the band to make a name for themselves, and what better way to do it than with something completely weird that also gives the audience no clue whatsoever as to what they’re about to hear”

Over the past year The Radioactive Grandma have been enjoying the warm reception their début album received, the self titled release having seen the band win a prestigious album of the year award as well as earning them some rave reviews. ”We recorded the album over the space of a couple of months ourselves at my home studio in Cavan, the album itself fell together’‘ said Johnno ”We had a fair bit of good ‘reviewage’ to accompany it  which is nice considering the album cost us nothing but time to make. As our first foray into the unsigned Irish indie scene, we were amazed at the response it got. Doing things on a shoestring budget of Zero really helps aid the creativity process and this formula of zero budget” Johno added.

At the moment TRAG are busy writing and recording some new material and are planning on a new release this year. ”Its coming along very well, we’ve a whole new array of songs to unleash and we’re hoping to surprise you all with this one. Our first album was bare-bones, what you hear is what we are kinda thing. This time we’re taking Grandma up a large flight of stairs to the next level’‘.

February is sure to be a busy month for the trio, not only are they releasing a new video but they are also playing support to Steve Craddock of  Ocean Colour Scene and Paul Weller fame in Monroe’s, Galway on Sunday the 16th. ”It is going to be crazy!” Johno shares his excitement.

Coming into festival season there is no doubt that the band are about to get even busier  ‘‘ we have lined up this year, and we also look forward to playing festival in Ireland and abroad. We want to take our  show all over the place and continue to bring our band’s music to the ears of everyone who will listen. Grandma is coming”
