Taylor Swift couldn’t have timed her two-day stint at 3Arena any better. Less than 48 hours after the self-proclaimed ‘greatest pop star on earth’ Kanye West came crashing back down to that very planet after a less than impressive performance at Glastonbury, T-Swizzle to some, Tay Tay to others, ended the European leg of her world tour with a bonanza of non-stop singing and dancing the likes of which this country hasn’t seen in a very long time.

For once, 3Arena provided the perfect setting, its relatively compact room allowing everyone to get up close and personal with the Pennsylvanian. And we mean up close and personal. A runway that divided those in the standing area in half elevated and rotated throughout the gig, giving everyone in the audience a chance to make the perfect addition to their Snapchat stories.

As is the case with most acts touring their latest album, Swift opens with the album’s first track Welcome To New York and it’s impossible not to do a little shuffle in your seat as wristbands (handed to everyone in the audience) flash and pulse to the beat. Swift clearly left no stone unturned when planning this tour. It all works. Blank Space is the first of the big hits and is quickly followed by a brooding and almost unrecognisable rendition of Trouble.

Swift is fully aware of her fans, even claiming to recognise a few faces from Twitter and Instagram. More telling though is her admission of the mistake she made by not bringing her ‘Red’ album tour to Ireland. In a bid to appease the fans, she plays an acoustic version of Hard Ground which sparks a mass singalong before she confirms that the country singer inside her was no more as she plays a modern electro-pop version of Love Story. It may have been better than the original.

Meanwhile, the all-out sensory bonanza continues as wristbands flash, dancers hang from what seem like floating lampposts and Taylor changes from one sparkling outfit to the next. Bad Blood booms around the venue before Swift dons an electric guitar for an unexpectedly heavy We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. The highlight of the night is the superbly energetic Out Of The Woods, which concludes with a burst of confetti that fills the air and provides the most incredible backdrop for closing track Shake It Off. Swift is joined by all her dancers on the elevated platform as it spins 360 degrees, and the 3Arena shakes thanks to the deafening screams.

A petition was set up when Kanye West was announced as a Glastonbury headliner earlier this year. Its argument was that West didn’t fit the festival’s aesthetic. On tonight’s evidence, it’s only a matter of time before Miss Swift is on that Pyramid Stage proving herself to actually be the undisputed best pop star on the planet.
