Fresh from a high-profile support tour around Europe – coupled with an exciting festival period including two standout performances at Electric Picnic 2015, Ireland’s premier vocal harmony group Wyvern Lingo have dropped new single Subside on Soundcloud ahead of its release November 27.

Subside sees Wyvern Lingo sidestep their folk foundations somewhat entering a darker sonic space than ever before, mixing tight En Vogue-esque harmonies with Fiona Apple-esque percussion and bass – all laid on top of a bed of musical playfulness akin to Hiatus Kaiyote.

This interesting melding of influences produces a fine track. As such, Subside stands as perhaps Wyvern Lingo’s finest and most intriguing track to date. Their previous output lies amidst a plethora of similar sounds in the industry while this dark and daring delivery stands firmly as Wyvern Lingo’s own – this is the future of their sound.

This sonic change has been rumbling in the background for a few years now. For some time, their live shows have seen a slow and steady move from acoustic and harmony-laden with the slow introduction of electric guitar, new pedals and synth gadgetry. Tracks like Sweet Life Ruiner and Letter to Willow stand as stark changes to their first 4-track EP from last year (which we premiered here).

This switch is further evidenced by the dropping of Used, one of their most popular tracks, in their setlist at the Other Voices stage at Electric Picnic. Perhaps a conscious decision to introduce the new, electronically enabled and less bare-vocal dependent back catalogue.

In order to stand out among the crowded music scene, this is the path that Wyvern Lingo have chosen to tread. A path that requires risk-taking and a focus to mould and develop this unique sound. It’s a scary path for a band that received bucket loads of plaudits and were hotly tipped for a sound that is now changing tenfold. It certainly seems to us that the latter path is the one less traveled by, and as such would be the correct path to take.

This is an act that only in the last year have decided to take the band on full-time, and with the backing of Rubyworks and a strong team behind them, the future is bright.

This time, it just seems to be a slightly different future. A future we can’t wait to share.
