We at GoldenPlec like to think we are alive to new talent and do our best to highlight it when we hear it. Back in 2013, This Other Kingdom arrived with their debut EP ‘Sunlight’. It caused quite a stir and by the years end it had made GoldenPlec's top 10 EP's of the year. Since then This Other Kingdom have been diligently striving to release their debut album 'Telescopic'. We are delighted to bring you an exclusive stream of 'Telescopic'.
Ahead of its release, This Other Kingdom's Del Kerton took time to speak to GoldenPlec about the making of their new album.
The ‘Sunlight’ EP made people stop and listen instantly creating a buzz about This Other Kingdom. "The reaction to the EP was fantastic. Being play-listed on radios in the UK, America and even as far as Brazil was surprising.” says Kerton “but we all believed in the music and knew that there was an audience for the EP out there. We're hoping our album catches on in our home country this time."
One aspect that has held This Other Kingdom back from making a bigger impact over the past few years has been ever evolving lineup. For a variety of reasons it has been in a state of flux "We originally thought we needed to fill the sound. Unfortunately, some lineup changes after the EP affected the bands progress and our inability to tour after the EP left us a bit stranded." but working as a four-piece has brought back the enthusiasm and harmony that was beginning around the time of ‘Sunlight’,”
The current lineup now has given them the stability they craved and they are about to embark on an Irish, UK and European tour with an appearance at Vantastival to look forward to, with Kerton adding that This Other Kingdom "are finally settled and everything has come together. Everything happens for a reason I suppose."
Another benefit to having the lineup complete was what new drummer Chris "Git" Sweeney brought to the band. It resulted in two of the stand-out songs Vacate The Horror and Fine Line from the ‘Sunlight’ EP being re-recorded "We actually only re-recorded the drums for these songs. Our drummer Git was not on our first EP, and we liked the vibe he brought to the songs. So it made sense to re-record them on the new record."
This Other Kingdom's sound is heavy, neo-psychedelic, with hints of The Doors and The Horrors. 'Telescopic' advances what they began with the 'Sunlight' EP with no let-up in quality. Kerton is not one for writing a tune for a record awash with production tricks only to strip it down for live performances "We always write songs with the intention of playing live. It was important to us to capture the intensity and energy that we create at our live shows and we feel like we have achieved this with 'Telescopic'."
