UPDATE: Sweeney’s have issues a statement. The press release is included below.

News has reached GoldenPlec today that Dublin music venue Sweeneys is to close. Sweeneys has been a central part of grassroots music in Ireland for several years now, running countless gigs and club nights, mostly for free, and will be sorely missed by the musical community in Ireland.

Early news might have indicated that Sweeney’s could close on Saturday May 14th with a post on the bar’s website titled The End Of The World As We Know It, stating

“Sweeney’s is closing! To celebrate the end of the world as we know we’ll be hosting some of the best acts to have graced our stages. Line up to follow”

However, we have since learned that Sweeney’s will stay open until the end of June.

The guys at Sweeney’s have just released a press release statement on their closing.

Statement From Sweeney’s

It’s with a heavy heart that we can confirm the rumours are true, Sweeney’s, as we know it, will be shutting it’s doors at the end of June this year.

It’s been an incredible seven years jam packed with more music and craic than we could have ever imagined. The sense of togetherness, the inspiration and the love that has poured through the building has been something else. It’s been a hub of activity for the local scene, somewhere to hang out and meet other musicians, somewhere to jam, somewhere to store your gear and an amazing place to play your first gig. A home to poets, wanderers, troubadours, messers and more than a few mad bastards, it’ll be sorely missed and we’ll miss you all.

It’s been a joy to see so many wonderful acts grace our stages over the years, to see them grow, hone their craft and make a name for themselves out in the big bad world. We’ve also had the pleasure of working with some of the finest djs, promoters, collectives, engineers, artists and staff…….there’s just far too many to mention but you all know who you are!

It’s the end of the world as we know it……but we feel fine.

Keep your eyes peeled online over the next few weeks, we’ve still got a few tricks up our sleeves, a few guest appearances from former staff members, the return of as many of our house bands from over the years and more than a few of your favourite bands and djs taking to the stage for one last show.

7 years, thousands of gigs, 2 months to go and one serious blow out.

We don’t know for sure what the future holds but you can’t keep a good dog down.

From the bottom of our hearts thank you all for making it what was.

Peace, Love & Music
The Sweeney’s Mongrel
