2018 has been quite a year for  Boy Azooga – the brainchild of Welsh multi-instrumentalist Davey Newington – with killer over-before-you-know-it single Loner Boogie picked up by BBC Radio 1.

Their debut album ‘1,2 Kung Fu’, followed to critical acclaim in June leading to several high-profile festival slots across the UK.

The biggest of those festival sets came at Green Man in Wales. We spoke to Davey Newington backstage and he revealed that he’s wasting no time in putting together a follow up to ‘1,2 Kung Fu’.

“I thought I had it down earlier in the year but then you go to places like Green Man, see someone like The Lemon Twigs and you’re like ‘Aw man, I want to make a record like that now’. But yeah I don’t want to wait too long, so June is what I’m aiming for.”

Davey recorded the debut album himself, playing every instrument on it. However, now that he has a band behind him, he’s looking to bring that sound to the next record.

“There are five or six tracks that I definitely want to do as a band, ‘cause it’s just amazing having the guys, they’re amazing musicians. I kinda handpicked them for this project. I’m a big fan of capturing the sound of a band in a room, there’s something different about it.

“It’s a weird, magical thing that you don’t get when you layer it up on your own. So yeah, I’ll probably do five or six with the boys but there a few I want to do on my own ‘cause I do like the self-indulgence of that too!”

Boy Azooga play live at The Grand Social, Friday October 5th. Tickets €13 on sale here.
