The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland have today announced that they have received no applications for the music-drive alternative rock sound broadcasting license for Dublin city and county.

The news comes as a bit of a shock as previously there was 2 expressions of interest including former Phantom FM owner Simon Maher, with his new entity 8 Radio. However the bigger shock, is that this looks to mean TXFM have not applied to renew their license.

The contract runs until October 26th, so there won’t be a dramatic shift in the landscape for 6 months but it looks as if (unless something major happens in the next few weeks), TXFM will not be on the air come November.

The BAI committee is set to meet in April to discuss the matter and the hole that this leaves. There’s a few question marks now over the future of the station, it’s DJs and staff and what that means for Communicorp, is it restructuring and changing direction, is there not enough audience share in the alt-rock market. We certainly are saddened to hear this news as regular listeners.

Will you miss TXFM? Were you a regular listener? What do you think about the prospect of losing one of your favourite stations? Let us know as we’d love to hear from the fans of TXFM about what the music the DJs spin for us on a daily basis means to them.

UPDATE

TXFM have themselves confirmed this news means they will be no more…. :(
