Welcome to a swanky new weekly feature here on GoldenPlec. It’s called “The Plec Picks: What we’re listening to” and (surprise!) it’s a list of songs that we’ve been listening to this week. It’s an opportunity to get to know what songs have been running through our heads on a weekly basis. The songs that we’ve perhaps listened to on repeat two or three dozen times…

It’s a great way to listen some cracking tunes and discover new music! If you don’t like the sound of that then click here.

Click play once (it’s a playlist) and it’ll cycle through all the videos / songs (so you can just leave the tab open and go back to pretending to work if you’d like) and if you come across something that doesn’t float your boat, just skip it. Simples!

Playlist me already!

What’s in there?

1) Two Door Cinema Club – Sleep Alone (Chosen by Sean Smyth)

Not only have I been listening to this song, I’ve been listening to the album Beacon in anticipation for the Academy gig on the 7th of September. I cannot wait and with The Cast of Cheers supporting, it’s gonna be a good one!

2) Jake Bugg – Taste It (Chosen by Ashling O’Brien)

Loving Jake Bugg, a lot at the minute. There’s loads of potential from this Dylan-esque 18 year old. Taste It is his stand out track and you won’t get it out of your head.

3) Konono No. 1 – Wumbazanga (Chosen by Yan Oisín)

Konono No. 1’s music in general only clicked with me recently, but I’ve loved the sound of electric likembes since I first heard them. Best instrument ever! I’ve been listening to them in a playlist with Adebisi Shank a lot this week, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re fans.

4) The Cure – Just Like Heaven (Chosen by Deirdre Harrison)

Absolute favourite Cure song, have had it on repeat all week in anticipation for Electric Picnic. Got to see some of their set but missed this song. Typical!

5) Heathers – Forget me Knots (Chosen by Aidan Cuffe)

The new Heathers album is just on the horizon and having given it multiple listens we can tell you’re going to like it. It’s a massive shift in instrumentation and so much of it is upbeat and catchy. The lead track Forget Me Knots is a classic example of what’s to come.

6) BATS – BATS spelled backwards is STAB (Chosen by Sean Noone)

Why am I listening to BATS? Is it something to do with the Dark Knight Rises being out? Is it something to do with the discovery of the Higgs Boson Particle (they have a song called that)? Is it because I’m a nerd and they have songs about science? No. While all the above things are true, it’s just that this song came on shuffle the other day and I forgot how much I like it.

7) The Gaslight Anthem – 45 (Chosen by Niall Mac Suain)

The Gaslight Anthem are one of the most underrated bands around at the moment and this song, the lead track from their most recent album, has been on repeat on my iPod for weeks now. If you’re a fan of Springsteen, you’ll love this!

8) ALB feat. The Shoes – Golden Chains (Chosen by Alice Goodwin)

Possibly the catchiest song to appear in an advert in quite a while. The search for the artist and song name was well worth the effort!

9) Yeasayer – Fingers Never Bleed (Chosen by David Dooley)

Cos it’s only bleedin Yeasayer! One of the most interesting alternative bands trying to be a pop/RnB band

10) Iron Maiden – Run to the Hills (Chosen by Liam O’Dubhghaill)

Not on my regular playlist but I heard it on Phantom a few days ago for the first time in years and haven’t been able to stop singing it to myself.

11) Greeen Linez – Palm Coast Freeway (Chosen by Nicola Byrne)

It’s Autumn, but who needs summer when you’ve got a Greeen Linez record? The perfect track to accompany an 80s inspired electro cruise down Strand Road, put Palm Coast Freeway on full blast and turn that rain into a gentle sea-spray.

12) Jenna Nicholls- All The While (Chosen by Claire Kane)

Fairplay Collective sent me the album, ‘Curled up Toes in Red Mary Janes and it has pretty much been the only thing that gets a play on my iPod over the past few days’. She is a musical gem and this song is particularly beautiful. She reminds of Alela Diane, another rather obscure American songstress or our own Lisa Hannigan. Particularly good for wind-down listen.

13) Friends – I’m His Girl (Chosen by Vanessa Monaghan)

Five piece from Brooklyn who ooze attitude. I’m His Girl has an addictive bassline and rhythm . The song reels you in with a slow build up in the intro and then seems to be three minutes of continuous chorus. Oh, it’s got cowbell too!

14) Crow Black Chicken – White Lightning (Chosen by Paul Dowd)

A smallish Irish band who sound like they come from a ranch out in Texas or somewhere. Got a real soul/blues style to them very easy to listen to.

15) Todd Terje – Inspector Norse (Chosen by Claire Beck)

In anticipation of Todd Terje’s EP Dj set this weekend, I’ve had the standout track from his It’s The Arps album pretty much on repeat. It’s actually the happiest song in the world, dare you to try not dance along with a massive grin on your mush.

16) Daithi – Areir (Chosen by Alex Millar)

Trad-tinged, faintly mad, electro tune from Ireland’s own celtic instrumental DJ. Mary O’Hara’s unique vocal has been twisted by Daithi’s own unique production, creating a track that’ll seep under your skin. Anthemic.
