Band of The Week: Heathers
After a bit of a wait, Band Of The Week is back! blame the delay on combination of Exams and Sunny weather, and while we may fail our exams, our Frisbee skills have improved dramatically. Back to business and our band of the week, the brilliant Heathers.
Heathers are twin sisters Louise and Ellie McNamara who, in a very short time, have made a name for themselves as one of the Ireland’s most promising acts. The girls from Blackrock have supported Ghost Mice on their American Tour, Played support to Kimya Dawson on more than one occasion, were selected by First Contact Music for the Irish showcase at the CMJ Marathon in New York and only completed their Leaving Cert in June last year. All this and the duo freely admit that they have only really taken the whole music thing seriously for little over a year and a bit.
They released their debut album ‘Here, Not There’ , recorded a week before their mock exams, in May last year. It sees a mix of folk style acoustic guitar melodies and superb vocal harmonies that couldn’t be further from the traditional Irish singer-songwriter style. Fresh and vibrant, their sound has elements of pop of the likes of Los Campesinos! rather than the seriousness of a Damien Rice, with a slice of Tegan and Sara thrown in for good measure.
I’ll have to watch out, I’m starting to sound like I know what I’m talking about so let yourself be the judge. Heathers are currently completing an American Tour in support of Ghost Mice but are set to play Oxegen’s IMRO New Sounds Stage and hopefully a few more Irish Dates this summer. I highly, highly recommend giving them a listen.
