There is a couple of gigs this week that really ticket our fancy, but to be fair one gig really stood out and i wish i had the money to be at it but unfortunately life is cruel sometimes.
Lynyrd Skynyrd are hitting Dublin for a gig in The O2 for €54.80 / €49.20 and amazing not only are tickets still on sale, there’s decent seats going on Ticketmaster too, a quick scan there put me in the middle of Block D which is down on the lower level, so you actually would be getting a good seat.

Its not often these legends come to town so if you like them, its not to be missed

Also rans this week are Dave Matthews Band with Alberta Cross, Passion Pit, Fionn Regan, James McMorrow and Ellie Goulding all hitting Dublin this week.

For us however there is only one gig of the week, 2 top Irish bands playing The Academy this coming Saturday is too good a proposition to see two top Irish acts in one place. Tickets are €20 and if you didnt enter the competition we ran for tickets then your absolutely mad.

Plenty of other top gigs on this week including Groove Armada and God is an Astronaut and 30 seconds to mars on Friday , followed by Finlay Quaye in The Village on Saturday, and JLS in The O2 to drive the ladies wild. This week the obvious superstar gig that needs no extra promotion is Lady GaGa in The O2, We couldnt give that gig of the week. There is also the Meteor Awards but i firmly believe that any gig involving both The Script and Westlife is just that tad too girly to be a gig of the week. Neither need any extra promotion.

I would like to gig a special mention to the Haiti Benefit Show, but there are so many Haiti concerts going on, but as with all charity gig, happy to give a mention and hope they raise as much money as possible.

So this week we are choosing Seasick Steve as the gig of the week, and for a good reason, This man is a festival merchant, he’s hard to pindown in a solid venue. Vicar Street is a nice intimate enough venue for a gig of this acts size. The show is second to none, truly a master musician at work and i do really highly rate him as one of the best live act’s going at the moment.

At €28 – €34 its not the cheapest but certainly not the most expensive, a fair price i would say.

Notable other mentions are Readers Wives, Band of Skulls and Yeasayer (both we gave ticket away to yesterday) and Hayseed Dixie in Tripod will no doubt be crazy fun.

Gig of the Week this week is PILOTLIGHT @ THE BUTTON FACTORY for their new album “The Post War Musical” launch party. We feel this gig will be an absolute cracker from old friends of the site. Pilotlight played PLECAID in The Sugar Club back when we ran a charity gig for the Tsunami victims under the guise of former name, Polar.

Pilotlight before their switch to london were one of the busiest bands around ireland and their absense from the dublin gigging scene has been a gaping hole for us. So were hoping the time away has set them up for a real comeback and that the album is nothing short of the quality we expect from them.

Definitely pop along to this one, These guys deserve your support!

If thats not up your alley (and i ask you, why the hell not!) we also recognise that Airbourne are playing The Academy that night for €19.50. Last time these guys were here they rocked the foundations of whelans. These guys are one of the bands whom may lay claim to the title of next top rock band. If i could be there, i would, there’s just too much that night to make it. However i have no doubt this gig will be an absolute rocker and it runs a close second for gig of the week.

This week is a quiet enough week, end of January, maybe MCD and Aiken were having the early 2010 blues, who knows, but thats not the worst thing when it comes to music sometimes instead of being overloaded with giant acts (The biggest this week is probably Vitalic) we have a little more focus on smaller acts who can get forgotten under a snow of international artists visiting the shores.

The week we have gigs like Craig Walker (and Sweet Jane) at Whelans, Donna Dunne at Whelans, Goat boy launching their EP and Lauren Guillery at Le Cirk, and all of those gigs were in the toss up for gig of the week, each will be intimate and exciting with acts who are pushing for deserved attention. This week however we have plump for Gemma Hayes in The Odessa Club.

Gemma Hayes was Nominated for Best Female Act at The Meteor Awards 2009 and Nominated for Best Solo Female at the Irish Music TV Awards. Her Song Chasing Dragons has received a hefty amount of  radio play over the last 2-3 months, She’s currently working on a new album so you might get tidbits of it at the gig if your lucky.

Pretty Quiet on the gig front this week, hard to pick a top gig but i think Pete Doherty is the one stand out act and he’s playing TONIGHT in The Academy.

Tickets are €26.50 and as far as i can see are still on sale. With Doherty you get an air of mystery, for one, you never know if he’ll show up, and if he does it normally can be a quite interesting night.

Aside from that gig its worth mentioning there is a Haiti Fundraiser on Sunday in Whelans, and we always like to push the charity gigs.

This week, Our First in 2010, Or 0-10 as i keep referring to it as, we have decided that the gig of the week this week is coming up on Friday 8th of January. The Dark Room Notes play The Academy 2 (downstairs) for the princely sum of €12.

Dark Room Notes were one from H.W.C.H. who we thought had a better performance in them, and maybe the more intimate and personal stage and venue of The Academy 2 will provide this, With their album picked up internationally its quite possible they wont play as intimate a gig for a long time. Gig of the Week this week we are going to go slightly under the radar here because with The Mars Volta, Basement Jaxx, Lily Allen, White Lies, Depeche Mode, Rodrigo Y Gabriella and Bell X1 all playing this week. Its an absolutely insane week with regards top acts being in dublin.

Joe Bonemassa is a Blues and Rock Musician, with an air of Virtuoso guitarist about him. By age 7 he was playing stevie ray vaughan songs note for note on guitar. The Early work was Electric but in recent times has a lot more acoustic work. Just watching him playing an acoustic like its an electric guitar is a sight to behold.

If Blues and Classic Rock are up your alley, This could well be an Epic gig for you to see, we would highly reccomend it.
