MykelEPMykel, spelled the Weezer way rather than the Franz Ferdinand way, is the beat heavy, semi-singer-songwriter project of Michael Fitzpatrick and his music sounds like neither of those two bands.

Based on his ‘Hold On’ EP he could come from California or from Edinburgh, or from anywhere else for that matter. The big beats of his production means he slots right in to the global community so effortlessly that you couldn’t possibly guess where he’s from. Not that, that matters a whole bunch -It’s probably a good point that Micheal can’t be identified as being a Dub. But it only makes his tunes more bland.

A wise man once said “Big Beats are the best” and Mykel is definitely chasing that ethos (although we can’t really speculate on the “Get high all the time” section). From the opening notes of Hold On, you almost have to stop yourself from double-checking your iPod and making sure that you haven’t accidentally clicked on your secret Plain White T’s playlist. But luckily, there’s enough flittering synths and the ‘big beats’ to shake those thoughts from your head.

Like all good producers he’s packing in the ‘feats’ on the EP with Ati Fisher and Neekz adding their sounds to the release. Fisher guests on Sweet Valentine, Neekz spits verse on Roc’a’boom. But both tracks refuse to sit well and the lyrics department leaves a lot to be desired especially with lines like “that girl was good enough to eat.”

Mykel’s ‘Hold On’ has the feel of a man on uncertain footing – it’s a good effort but it ain’t got no conviction. You almost feel like he’s pretending with his blasé lyrics and club anthem vibes. He seems much more at home with the minimalist, R n’ B electro-acoustic vibe of the opener than the ‘callin’ all girls to the dancefloor’ vibe of Sweet Valentine.  But this is the path he’s chosen, and he’s walking it nonetheless.
