Miss Kate & The Higher StateMiss Kate & The Higher Estate blend a variety of genres together to create something truly unique and enjoyable. Having lived and started her career in New York, Miss Kate has a wide range of influences and experience. The EP juxtaposes more traditional Blues, Soul and Jazz music with more Hip-Hop, House and Urban influences. Miss Kate’s voice stands somewhere perfectly in the middle of these genres, the tone suits the Blues style, but still has a very particular edge that means that it is ideal for the more Hip Hop side of things.

The debut self titled EP is truly promising. Songs like Took The Life have that edge that really shows off the originality of this artist, and also shows the more Urban and Hip Hop influences.

The saxophone solo in Floating, is a high point also, as it embodies everything the EP represents – the blend between modern culture and traditional musical styles. With the rise in interest and popularity in saxophone as an instrument in modern music, it’s an ideal way to summarise  what Miss Kate & The Higher State are doing.

Miss Kate’s voice is a particularly enjoyable aspect to the EP, it is unusual and unique – there is something about it that is enchanting, and relaxing. Just Be notably shows her vocal talent, and her lyrical skill. Furthermore, this song also portrays the skill of The Higher State, with saxophone and guitar solos that fit so perfectly into the song. As the lyrical writer, she says that she enjoys mixing dark lyrics with an upbeat accompaniment; she also says that a lot of her lyrics are slightly ‘tongue in cheek’. Musically, the EP is beautiful. The Higher State have a wide range of talents and they are all shown in a great light throughout.

All in all, the EP is very enjoyable and interesting. The band are doing something innovative and unique, a solid debut indeed.
