Band Review: The Last Crash
Here at GP we hope to make this review the first of many, were hoping bands will send us music and EPK’s regularly to review and put up. Basically we’ve decided on a format and it a 3 tiered review system. 3 of the goldenplec team will review a band, Dionsis (Aidan), Skylarkin (Kevin), and a 3rd special guest reviewer each week from the team. eventually of course the 3rd man will repeat but it will spice things up and give 3 very differing views on the same band. This we hope will add a fair and just review of each band.
With that in mind, here we go
Skylarkin (Kev)
It’s been a long summer of festivals and I hate to say it, but I’ve grown festival fatigued, and that’s got nothing to do with the travelling, sleeping in a field or dodgy fast food, its to do with having to listen to pap like The Hoosiers and The Wombats playing every single festival. I pick those two out but really it could be any of them, Scouting for Girls, The Feeling etc. , to be honest they are all molding into one at this stage. So when I was asked to review the EPK of The Last Crash, I was justifiably anxious of what I was going to have to listen to, my ears and my sanity have had enough of these cheerful indie-pop acts.
Thankfully they were not. They have a sound which is very prominent in new Irish music at the moment in the likes of delorentos and The Flaws. You instantly pick up the Muse influence in their music and to a certain extent they remind you of Muse at their softest. What I felt when listening to their EPK is that, with the exception of ‘Melt Me’, their music just needed a little more bite to really push it forward. Don’t get me wrong, The Last Crash are a very solid band, their songs are well written and musically well executed, and you get the feeling the band know what they are about but I’d like to see them push themselves a bit harder and give their music a bit more of an edge, make it stand out more or risk it being forgettable. The Band are set to release their debut EP in August and already have another 2 EP’s ready for release in the 6 months after. All round, The Last Crash are a good band that are showing good potential. check them out.
Dionsis (Aidan)
As Kev said above, were festival weary, personally I’ve been to Glastonbury and Oxegen and some Marley park gigs, i’ve been to see many bands over the course of 2 months and for the most part a lot of bands i’d never really seen or heard before. This to me is how I find my new music and I think its the beauty of festivals that I can see bands I really want to see but then go and seek out new music.
We Recieved the EPK from “The Last Crash” and over the last few weeks have been listening to it on and off. Being the busy men we are with festivals gigs and running the site alongside having lives time very much isnt on our side. Eventually i got a bit of time where I wasnt too busy to listen and not appreciate and opened up the EPK.
There’s plenty of information about “The Last Crash on the EPK, so i’ll keep the about them short, they are a 4 piece indie/ambient rock band from Dublin (it would seem though i cant find a passage of text confirming such). They have been gigging around Dublin and Waterford during this summer and with any luck will be gigging around a lot more.
There are 4 songs to listen to, the first tune Crash very much reminds me of an american band called Oleander, and thats very much a compliment as i really like Oleander. Oleander for me are a ambient rock band, its not too heavey but they quite easily switch between light music to rocking out a bit. Ive always been a bit of a fan and this song had that gentle impression of a good tune to get you moving without racing to the heaviest most distortion riddled chord progression. This tune grew on me over time.
The second and third songs Melt me and Stories from an Island really gave me a Muse like Vibe, the songs again air on the side of light rock without being poppy in the slightest. There is something about the voice of the singer Anthony that made me feel like i was listening to an older muse track and that again is a compliment as muse are a cracking band. Maybe the only thing missing was an impossibly rediculous solo that matt bellamy would have churned out but i think this band airs on the side of simplicity and it REALLY works for them.
The final song Haunted to me has the catchiest beat of the lot, again keeping with the ambient tone of the bands normal type of music the tune might not be the best of the 4 songs, but it certainly was the one which i found myself humming later on to the drum beat of the song. Personally i think any song that can make you hum it hours later is onto something, its the really pop music is popular and its definitely how bands end up getting remembered and talked about when you cant get them out of your head.
Overall i enjoyed the 4 songs, and im sure they have more like it live which leads me to believe the live show would most definitely be something worth seeing.

First impressions are very important in music. The first thing that hits you listening to ‘Crash’ is the lead singers (Anthony Wigglesworth) strong voice. It reminded me of Paul Walsh from Royseven. The simple and catchy drums and guitars get your feet tapping.
The second song, ‘Melt Me’, instantly grabbed my attention with the funky bass riff, you can definitely hear the Muse influence in this song too that is evident in a lot of new bands these days. ‘Haunt Me’ was my personal favourite track, i enjoyed the simple guitar riff carrying through the whole song.
The more I listen to this band, the more I like them, after only 3 or 4 listens I found myself singing the chorus to the songs on the EPK. If you enjoy the current influx of bands playing simple, catchy songs like Delorentos and Royseven, you’ll definitely enjoy this band. It isn’t original, but it’s well done.

I'll be doing that but sounds like a genre already saturated as Kev has touched on.
